Nathan Fillion's show, The Rookie, is now eight seasons strong and isn’t showing signs of slowing down. With one spinoff, The Rookie: Feds, already behind us, lasting only one season, the creators are ready to try again with a new premise and filming is set to begin in Vancouver, Canada later in February 2026.

What’s ‘The Rookie: North’ about?

The show will follow Alex Holland (Jay Ellis), a man who manages to avoid having a mid-life crisis until he experiences a home invasion. After that experience, he decides to join the Pierce County Police Department in Washington state. With Pierce County as the setting, the show can explore a more rural setting where backup can take 15 minutes to show up, but as Alexi Hawley, the creator, describes it “if you need the world to show up, it shows up in a giant way.”

One of the goals of this show is to move away from the stereotypical dense metropolis setting that most procedural cop shows favor. New York, Chicago, and even Los Angeles are often the focus of this genre. Hawley is excited to explore a smaller police force in a location that includes the city of Tacoma & its suburbs, a National Park, a military base, and the local rural areas.

What Makes this Spinoff Different?

The beginning of The Rookie: North, while similar to its predecessor, does have its differences. Both have middle-aged men joining a police force where they’ll have to quickly prove their worth to everyone around them, but Alex Holland is described by Alexi Hawley as being “more lost” than John Nolan (Nathan Fillion). Holland has personal tragedy and never quite found a passion before the show takes place, whereas Nolan “was just a little lost after his divorce,” according to the showrunner.

This isn't the first time The Rookie has attempted a spin-off in the hopes of creating another successful and well-loved show. However, unlike The Rookie: Feds, this new show does not currently have any plans for cross-over characters or storylines. For now, Hawley says that The Rookie: North will remain a separate entity. However, should the new show have success, he hasn't ruled out the possibility of things changing down the line.

For now, we'll have to wait and see what The Rookie: North has in store and if it'll measure up to the flagship series. In the meantime, you can find The Rookie airing on ABC at 10pm on Monday evenings.
